Foreign real estate buyers in France account for 6% of sales

Jan 2018. The British, despite Brexit, still represented one third of transactions by foreign buyers who were not resident in France, in 2016. Between 2006 and 2016 the British were the main non-resident foreign buyers of French property. During this period the market share of foreign buyers was 6% and of that figure were non-resident foreigners at 2.1.

The proportion of British buyers has varied over the ten year period analyzed: from 42% in 2007 it dropped to 21% in 2011. This significant drop was put down due to the crisis, which greatly diminished the purchasing of British buyers who were the main foreign buyers in almost all regions besides the Paris region, where they followed the Italians and the Americans. Significant to note is the Belgian buyers` activity which doubled in ten years from 7% in 2006 to 15% in 2016. This study covers French real estate purchases of newer houses and older apartments, main and second homes.
